New vehicle will save time, lives

East End lifeguards racing to a rescue won’t have to wheel rubber duckies on to the beach.

The club recently acquired a brand-new SSV (side-by-side vehicle) just in time for summer, replacing an older model that broke down.

During winter training, lifeguards were wheeling boats on to the beach but would take too long if there is a rescue, said East End Surf Lifesaving Club grants co-ordinator and patrol captain Hywel Davies said.

The new SSV will be able to safely support patrols and training in what’s expected to be a busy summer.

“This summer we expect to be busier than ever with the number of Kiwis vacationing at home. The new SSV will be essential to our volunteer lifeguards during the summer,” he said.

The vehicle will be used to transport the IRBs (inflatable rescue boats), used for the majority of rescues to and from the beach.

“It can also be used to move equipment that was in use for patrols and if someone is injured and needs help, [it will] safely get them from the beach to our first aid facility or an ambulance.”

A Lotteries grant funded 60 per cent of the vehicle.

“We were then able to make up the remainder of the cost via our own fundraising.”

Davies said Yamaha New Zealand is proud to be associated with Surf Lifesaving New Zealand (SLSNZ) and was great to work with to provide this equipment.
“They helped us get a unit that is customised and ruggedised for us by surf lifesaving,” he said.

“We are very grateful to the Lottery and Yamaha for their support.”

Volunteers at East End will follow SLSNZ rules that require anyone who drives the SSV to have a driver’s licence and to follow all safety rules associated with the vehicle.

East End Surf Club has now started its spring/summer training season and is keen to accept/welcome new members. If you are interested in joining, message us on Facebook or send an email to eastendslsc@yahoo.com
