Taranaki first five Josh Jacomb was the star in his team’s record-breaking 50-8 win over Auckland at Eden Park in the National Provincial Championship on Saturday.

Jacomb scored a total of 30 points in the third-round match, including three tries and a near-perfect record off the tee with six conversions and a penalty.

His efforts were the highest points scored by an individual for Taranaki in one NPC match, as he surpassed Beauden Barrett’s 29 points against Bay of Plenty in 2011.

Taranaki’s score was also the highest winning margin against Auckland, previously beating the 2011 record when the amber and blacks won 39-11 at Stadium Taranaki.

Jacomb scored the opening try of the match and a double in the second half, which quickly turned the match into a rout.

Wing Adam Lennox added two tries, while wing Vereniki Tikoisolomone and replacement Sage Walters-Hansen also scored for the Bulls, who led 22-3 at halftime.

In wet conditions, Taranaki held onto the ball better than their opponents and managed to turnover possession easily. From there, they also visited Auckland’s half with ease which they captialised on.

Meanwhile, the Taranaki Whio suffered a 36-12 loss to North Harbour in the Farah Palmer Cup on Saturday in Albany.

North Harbour led 22-0 at the break, while Taranaki managed two tries and a conversion in the second half.
