Football: FC Western bank first Central League win

FC Western have secured their first-ever Central League victory, defeating Wellington Phoenix Reserves 2-1 at Lynmouth Park on Sunday.

The breakthrough result ended a difficult start to the season for the New Plymouth-based side, which had gone winless through its opening eight matches and entered the contest on the back of a heavy 6-1 defeat to Napier City Rovers a fortnight earlier.

Co-coach Spencer Salt said the win was a significant moment for both the club and the region.

"It was fantastic to get our first ever Central League points at home," Salt said.

After working through rough weather during the week to ensure Lynmouth Park was playable, Western rewarded their supporters with a fast start.

The home side created the better of the early opportunities, with Scott Manning forcing a sharp save from the Phoenix goalkeeper before Western opened the scoring after 20 minutes. A corner from Leo Elder was allowed to bounce inside the penalty area and drifted in at the far post.

The visitors responded by enjoying more possession, but Western doubled their advantage through a moment of brilliance from Manning.

Breaking from halfway, Manning beat defenders on both sides before finishing calmly across goal to spark jubilant scenes among the home supporters.

"The ballboys were onto the pitch in celebration," Salt said.

The Phoenix made tactical changes after halftime and dominated possession for long periods as Western began to tire.

However, goalkeeper Michael Reive produced three outstanding saves while midfielder Ilias El Maakoul delivered a standout performance to help the hosts withstand the pressure.

The visitors pulled a goal back through Dylan Gardiner in the 88th minute to set up a nervous finish, but Western held on to claim a historic victory.

Salt said the result reflected growing momentum within the squad.

"An amazing day for the club and the region," he said.

"Four New Plymouth boys returning from overseas in the last three weeks and an upturn in our fortunes is no coincidence at all."

The result lifts confidence ahead of Western's next Central League fixture, when they host Petone at Lynmouth Park on June 21.
