Netball: Tysons continue dynasty with third straight win

Tysons further cemented their place as Taranaki netball's dominant force, claiming a third consecutive Versatile Netball Taranaki Premier One title with a 56-53 victory over New Plymouth Old Boys at TSB Stadium on Saturday.

The championship was Tysons' 13th Premier One crown in the past 14 seasons, continuing one of the most successful eras by any club in the province.

The defending champions made the ideal start, dominating the opening half to build a nine-goal lead before withstanding a spirited fightback from New Plymouth Old Boys in the closing stages.

Captain Amber Ormond said her side felt in control despite the challenge posed by their opponents.

“It felt like we were in control of the game, although Old Boys definitely tried everything and their shooter Davis [Leaf] was a challenge to shut down.

“He had a really accurate game, but our defenders were relentless and turned over ball when we needed it, which we were able to score.”

Centre Tiaan Taylor was named the match's Most Valuable Player, but Ormond said the title was the result of a complete team effort.

“Everyone contributed when they needed to.”

Tysons also used all 10 players in the final, including 16-year-olds Quinn Parker-Bishop and Robert Manu.

“I'm super proud of their contribution as 16-year-olds.”

Ormond said defending the title in front of a packed TSB Stadium crowd made the achievement even more special.

“It feels great to win. It was a great final and the stadium was packed with lots of supporters. It was awesome to be able to win it again in front of our life members.”

The victory extended Tysons' remarkable grip on the Premier One competition, with Saturday's triumph delivering the club a third straight championship.

In the day's other grand finals, Stratford-Eltham claimed the Premier Two title with a 43-36 win over Bell Block Marist Dragons, while Raukura won the Premier Three championship after defeating Inglewood 33-28.
