Basketball: White not returning for Taranaki next season

John White’s time with the Taranaki Airs has officially come to an end, with the former head coach deciding he will stay in Australia next season.

White, who coached the Airs during the 2026 National Basketball League season, had already confirmed he would not return for a second year in charge after previously indicating he intended to stay on.

The Airs have farewelled White on social media, thanking him for his contribution during his sole season with the franchise.

“John brought enormous passion, commitment and professionalism to the Airs, and his impact extended well beyond the basketball court,” the club said in a statement.

“We greatly appreciate everything he brought to our team, our town and the wider Taranaki community.”

White took over from Sam McKinnon ahead of the 2026 season, but the Airs endured a difficult campaign, finishing second-to-last in the 11-team competition.

They remained in contention for a top-six playoff berth late in the season before losing their final four regular-season games.

White said after the season the team under achieved but the season should be put into context with a new coach, general manager and playing group. He told the Taranaki Daily News he hoped the team would continue its foundations. 

"As we move into a new stage of life together next year, spending meaningful time together as a family during the season was going to be increasingly difficult," he told the Taranaki Daily News.

The Airs said White and his family would now move to Australia for their next chapter.

“As John heads across the Tasman for his next chapter in Australia, we wish him and his family every success for what lies ahead,” the club said.

“Thank you for everything, John. You’ll always be part of the Airs whānau.”
