Tysons need to keep the ball

Ball retention will prove to be a key factor for Tysons East in the top-of-the-table clash against Naumai in Taranaki’s premier netball competition at the TSB Stadium tonight.

The five-time defending champion is second on the table behind Naumai, which has an unbeaten record after three rounds.

Tysons’ coach Jane Parker said if the side maintained possession it would serve them well against a side that has gained momentum.

Parker’s 11-strong player roster has a sophisticated style of play that will be on their side.

She said Tysons used the first three rounds to establish what worked for the team and is looking to amplify those aspects tonight.

“Being so close to the end of the first round, we simply need to strengthen our invisible on-court threats.”

Parker is aware of Naumai’s position on the table, which is only separated by two points.

“Being in a position where you have nothing to lose and everything to gain is a strong intrinsic motivator.”

Tysons wing attack Nikita Roberts and defender Rhiannon Utton will be crucial players in the match.

“Nikita has been doing the hard mahi in the shadows and it’s paying off for her on court. Rhiannon is back in the mix this year in our defence and is disrupted as ever.”

Naumai coach Vicki Roberts puts the current run of success down to a week-by-week approach.

“The girls have a good relationship on and off the court, which also seems to be part of our mix and helps.”

Roberts signalled Taylah Kahui, Ricki Lockley and Heidi Kahupukoro as vital players for Naumai.

She said the Tysons would bring presence on court with stronger shooters.

 Centre pass is at 8:15pm.

New Plymouth Girls’ High School plays Inglewood at the earlier time of 6:45pm.

Only two points separate the teams with Inglewood sitting in third place on the competition table.

Girls’ High’s Liahna Smith has been punishing with her pinpoint feeds so far this season.

Stratford/Eltham will be looking for its first win of the season against New Plymouth Old Boys, also at 6:45pm.  The central Taranaki side is yet to register a point on the standings.

Old Boys’ first two quarters against Naumai was strong but players will need to be keep focused in the half as well to hold on to a win.
