IRB success for East End

 

Three Taranaki surf lifesaving clubs competed last weekend at the national IRB (inflatable rescue boat) championships held at Ruakaka Beach in Northland with East End claiming first place with 111 competition points. The second equal place was taken out by Sunset Beach (Auckland) with Waikanae (Gisborne) both on 82 points while St Kilda from Dunedin finished in third spot with 43 points.

 

East End’s Scott Nelson and Liam Cole claimed top overall crew in the Open Men’s Division for the second year in a row with a gold in Assembly and Mass Rescue. Other outstanding efforts from East End crews included Jerome Novak and Brodie Lilley claiming a gold in the Under 23 Men’s Single Rescue and Ollie Gooch and Rhys Donovan claiming a gold in the Under 19 Men’s Tube Rescue. The pinnacle event, the Open Men’s Team Rescue was won by East End with Scott Nelson, Liam Cole, Yannis Ko, James Morwood and Sinead Malley combining to secure the top club position.

 

New Plymouth Old Boys Surf Life Saving Club finished in seventh place on 29 points with Zoe Honeyfield and Casey Feaver claiming silver in Under 23 Women's Mass Rescue. Jacob Whittle and Jack Feaver also won a silver medal in the Under 19 Men’s Single Rescue.

 

Opunake Surf Life Saving Club finished 10th equal with Mairangi Bay on 21 points, claiming two bronze medals in the Under 19 Men's Tube Rescue (Caleb Lawn and Sam Drought) and the Under 19 Women’s Tube Rescue (Holly Horo and Macy Sinclair).

 

All three Taranaki clubs put in a huge effort preparing for this event and their months of training were reflected in their results.

Under 23 Male Single Rescue - Jerome Novak, Brodie Lilley and Sinead Malley

Open Male Assembly Rescue - Scott Nelson, Liam Cole and Sinead Malley

Open Male Mass Rescue - Scott Nelson, Liam Cole, Sinead Malley and Josh Thorburn

Open Males Team Rescue - Scott Nelson, Liam Cole, Yannis Ko, James Morwood and Sinead Malley
